Client: York County, SC
- Location:
- Historic Brattonsville, SC
- When the Cultural & Heritage History Museums of York County commissioned DP3 Architects to plan and design the restoration and renovations to the two-story residence, built ca. 1853 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, integrating sustainable design solutions let alone obtaining LEED certification was not a focus of the project. However, as the project progressed the sustainable design mindset emphasized at DP3 Architects took root. In fact, through creative planning and a focus on sustainable design practices, the project is in the review process and is on track to obtain LEED “Gold” certification.
Among the sustainable design concepts integrated into the project were: Removal and replacement of all exterior wood lapboard siding to abate lead-base paint Installation of insulation in exterior walls and roof to create an energy efficient building envelope Installation of a rain water collection and storage system for grey (non-potable) water usage for flushing toilets and irrigation Installation of a reflective roof material to minimize the heat-island effect Salvage and reuse of recyclable materials during construction Construction waste management techniques during construction
The end result – Hightower Hall has been restored to its nearly original state, remains listed on the National Register, and will likely become one of the oldest LEED “Gold” certified structures in South Carolina.
