Client: Surside Beach Fire Department
- Location:
- Surfside Beach, SC
- The town of Surfside Beach determined that the 1970’s pre-engineered structure housing their fire safety operations and emergency operations center had outlived its useful life and needed to be replaced. The Town commissioned DP3 Architects to provide the expertise necessary to plan and design a new 14,500 square foot, 2-story fire headquarters and emergency operations center to replace the existing facility.
The town council requested that, where practical, sustainable design solutions be incorporated into the project such as:
- Sorting of construction debris to maximize recyclables and minimize landfill waste
- Enhanced insulation (exceeds DOE guidelines)
- Insulated, tinted, argon-filled exterior glazing at window openings
- Low VOC paints
- High SEER, R410 refrigerant-filled HVAC units
- Energy recovery ventilator to minimize intake of outside air
- Water-saving plumbing fixtures with electronic sensors
- High-efficiency water heaters
- Rooftop solar collection system to heat water for showers
- Dual level light switching in spaces where practical
- Motion detectors for lighting where practical (offices, store rooms, etc.)
- Totally fluorescent (incandescent-free) interior lighting systems with electronic ballasts
- Exterior lighting controlled by timers and photocells
