de la Howe Hall

South Carolina Governor’s School for Agriculture | McCormick, SC

Built in 1938, de la Howe Hall is a historic campus landmark at the South Carolina Governor’s School for Agriculture at John de la Howe.

Located at the heart of campus, the 21,000-square-foot, two-story building has long served as a central piece on campus, reflecting both its history and its continued evolution.

The Renovation

The design honors the building’s historic character while repositioning it to serve as a modern academic and administrative facility. The renovation included updated classrooms, administrative and faculty office spaces, an auditorium, and new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. The existing windows were replaced and the building envelope restored in compliance with SHPO guidelines, while accessibility was improved through the addition of a new elevator and thoughtfully integrated ramps that complement the building’s aesthetic.

Enhanced Performance & User Experience

These improvements enhance the building’s long-term performance and create a more functional and welcoming environment for both students and staff.

A One-of-a-Kind Agricultural Education Experience

The South Carolina Governor’s School for Agriculture at John de la Howe is the only residential public high school in America devoted to agriculture. With a curriculum focused on agriculture, agribusiness, forestry, land management, and food science, the campus provides students with a hands-on educational experience rooted in both tradition and innovation.

The de la Howe Hall renovation brings a key part of campus back to life. The building is now prepared for its next phase of use, supporting students, the school, and the future of agriculture in South Carolina.
