The renovation of Gaffney‘s historic Carnegie Library demonstrates how thoughtful preservation and innovative design can create an entirely new cultural destination. Partnering with the City of Gaffney and TimeLooper, DP3 Architects transformed the 1914 library into Carolina Rising: A Revolutionary Experience. As the world’s first AI-driven museum of its kind, Carolina Rising combines immersive storytelling, artificial intelligence, and historic preservation to transform how visitors experience the American Revolution.

Located in the heart of downtown Gaffney between Kings Mountain National Military Park and Cowpens National Battlefield, the museum became a gateway to the stories of the Revolutionary War‘s Southern Campaign. Originally constructed in 1914, the Carnegie Library is one of only fourteen Carnegie libraries built in South Carolina between 1903 and 1916 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Preserving the building’s architectural integrity was central to the design approach. DP3 Architects carefully maintained the library’s historic character while integrating modern building systems, accessibility improvements, and museum infrastructure.

The museum experience places visitors at the center of history through advanced digital technology and interactive storytelling. Guests explore the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution through immersive exhibits, artificial intelligence-powered historical Patriots and Loyalists, a state-of-the-art theater that recreates the Battles of Kings Mountain and Cowpens, delivering an educational experience found nowhere else in the world.

The adaptive reuse of the Carnegie Library has created a destination that celebrates South Carolina’s Revolutionary history while inspiring visitors to discover all that downtown Gaffney has to offer.
