McGirt Auditorium
Located near Rock Hill’s vibrant Old Town district, McGirt Auditorium is a newly renovated performance venue with a rich cultural heritage. Once part of the Emmett Scott High School campus, the first public school for African Americans in Rock Hill, McGirt Auditorium has served the community since 1920. In 2024, the City of Rock Hill partnered with DP3 Architects to preserve the auditorium’s legacy while transforming it into a modern, multipurpose venue.
DP3 Architects’ design aimed to carefully restore the soul of McGirt Auditorium while delivering much-needed aesthetic and functional upgrades. The renovation prioritizes performance, comfort, and accessibility, ensuring that the auditorium remains a welcoming destination for generations to come.
Key renovation highlights include a new lobby addition featuring a reimagined welcome area with a new reception desk, modern finishes, and accessible restrooms. Performance capabilities were significantly enhanced with the installation of a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system, allowing the auditorium to support a wide variety of events. The stage and backstage areas were upgraded to include a revitalized stage and new dressing rooms that provide both comfort and functionality for performers. Additionally, exterior improvements were made to the courtyard, incorporating refreshed landscaping and a covered walkway that creates a seamless connection between the auditorium and the Emmett Scott Recreation Center.
With seating for up to 750 guests, McGirt Auditorium now functions as a premier venue for cultural performances, competitions, concerts, and more. It not only meets the technical standards of a modern theater but also preserves the cultural significance that has made it a cornerstone of the Rock Hill community.
