Building Futures: DP3 Architects Volunteers with Project Pipeline for SCNOMA
DP3 Architects recently had the opportunity to volunteer for the South Carolina Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects (SCNOMA) with their Project Pipeline initiative.
Project Pipeline is an educational day camp that introduces middle and high school students, particularly those from underrepresented communities, to the field of architecture. The program is designed to spark interest in architecture and design by providing students with hands-on experiences and mentorship from professionals in the industry. Through workshops, design challenges, and field trips, Project Pipeline equips students with the knowledge and skills to pursue careers in architecture and related fields.
For Project Pipeline’s inaugural camp hosted at the Clemson School of Architecture, SCNOMA partnered with the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Greenville County. Team members from DP3 Architects had the privilege of volunteering as professional mentors to the students, aiding in their design workshops and facilitating activities. The team also had the unique opportunity to participate in the tour of the Black Heritage Trail on Clemson University’s campus. The Black Heritage Trail features heritage sites connected to the stories of local Black history and South Carolina historical markers at significant historic sites. Overall, this experience was a way to give back and invest in the education and mentorship of future architects to ensure a vibrant and diverse profession.
As we look to the future of architecture, initiatives like Project Pipeline remind us of the power of mentorship, the importance of diversity, and the endless possibilities that arise when professionals invest in the next generation.

DP3 Architects Celebrates 40 Years in Business
DP3 Architects is excited to celebrate 40 years in business this year. What began as a venture by three classmates from Clemson University has grown into one of the most well-respected architecture firms in South Carolina.
In 1984, Mark S. Eggl, Samuel D. Justice, and J. Michael Taylor established Design Partnership, crafting their earliest designs in the confines of a basement, quickly gaining a reputation in the community for impeccable service to their clients, as well as designing buildings that were not only beautiful but functional and efficient. DP3 Architects’ passion for creating unique and innovative lasting designs that give places true functionality and purpose has been present from the very beginning. Some of the firm’s early projects included:
- Clemson University Hardin Hall Renovation
- Mauldin Sports Center
- Simpsonville Activity and Senior Center
- Greenville County Camp Spearhead
- Sirrine Stadium Restoration
Design Partnership navigated many changes, including a name change to DP3 Architects in 2003 and the transition to its second generation of leadership. Today the firm is led by Mike Pry, Meg Terry, Brian Thomas, and Ben Urueta. Guided by a shared vision, they continue to embrace the needs of an ever-evolving industry.
While evolution is inevitable, what has remained constant is DP3 Architects’ commitment to providing unique architecture, interior design, and planning services that ensure clients’ spaces not only meet their needs but also ignite a greater quality of life. Throughout the years, DP3 Architects has developed an extensive portfolio spanning across their four verticals: community, higher education, hospitality, and interiors. Notable projects include:
- The City of Greenville Public Works Campus
- Hale’s Jewelers
- Travelers Rest Municipal Campus
- City of Easley Fire Station Headquarters
- Scoundrel
- Cartwright Food Hall
- Anderson University Student Center
- Clemson University Doug Kingsmore Player Development Center
- Rupert Huse Veteran Center
- The Sumerel Office Building at Legacy Square
- Wells Fargo Center Renovation
These projects vary widely in size, scope, and purpose. What they all have in common, however, is the degree of expertise with which each was designed. The DP3 Architects team prides themselves on technical proficiency and their ability to collaborate with clients with the end goal of creating spaces that serve those who occupy them.
At the heart of DP3 Architects’ success lies its greatest asset: its team. From the most seasoned leaders to the newest hires, the talent and collective passion of the team is what drives the firm forward.
“40 years in business is a huge accomplishment. We would not be here without the vision of our 3 founding partners, the nearly 200 team members who have walked through our doors, our amazing clients and consultants, and of course this community which continues to support us on a daily basis. We owe each and every one of them our thanks.” – Brian S. Thomas, AIA | Principal & CEO
The firm’s culture and “Architecture-by-Team” approach creates a client and team member experience that has always revolved around a collaborative and fun setting. It is because of this culture that DP3 Architects has recently been named the “Best Architecture Firm in South Carolina” by the Greenville Business Magazine and one of the “Best Places to Work in South Carolina” by SC Biz News. In 2023 they received the “Firm Award” by AIA South Carolina. Looking ahead, DP3 Architects is committed to building upon its legacy of innovation and service, ushering in the next era of design excellence. As they embark on the next 40 years, they remain deeply grateful for the strong foundation of experience and expertise upon which they stand.
“Reflecting on four decades of practice, our journey has been defined by the dedication and collaboration of our remarkable clients and our team. Our longevity as a firm is a testament to the past and current leadership, the talent of our people, and our ability to continue to evolve in the profession of architecture and design. As we commemorate this milestone, we honor not only our past achievements but also the unwavering commitment to our clients and of every member of our team, whose passion and expertise continue to shape the spaces that inspire and endure.” – Meg Terry, AIA | Principal & CMO

In Memory of Mark S. Eggl
DP3 Architects mourns the loss of one of its founders, Mark S. Eggl, who passed away on March 17, 2024. Mark founded the firm in 1984 along with two Clemson University classmates; Samuel D. Justice and J. Michael Taylor. Mark was instrumental in shaping the firm’s culture and dedicated to providing the best quality projects and service to our clients.
Mark was a do-it-yourself farm boy from Cando, ND whose work ethic set an example for everyone he worked with. There was no daily task that he was too proud to do if it meant making the firm better. He was a fantastic detailer, able to offer solutions to unconventional problems. His designs combined simple, well-thought-out solutions, with the desire to always present a client with the unexpected. Notable projects he led include the Mauldin Sports Center, Pleasant Ridge Camp and Retreat Center, C.C. Woodson Community Center, Surfside Beach Fire Headquarters, and the Fountain Inn Heritage Museum.
As a mentor, Mark was very generous with his time. He would always stop what he was doing to answer a question about a project, the firm, or a personal issue that just needed a sympathetic ear. He was very willing to share his experiences with the young professionals in the office to help them be their best.
Mark thought of the community as a whole, dedicating his time to charities and causes that he felt passionate about. As a graduate of both Leadership Greenville and Leadership South Carolina he gained an understanding of issues that affected those around him and did his best as a leader to help contribute to their solutions.
We will remember Mark as a leader and a mentor. We will remember the way he threw his head back when he laughed, the time he gave to all who asked, and of course, the burgers. Nobody grilled like Mark!
Our thoughts are with his wife, Carla Ann , daughter Ashley, son Stephen, and their families.

Interior Design Material Boards
Design projects rely heavily on visual tools that illustrate the project’s overall mood and tone. Material boards, or flat lays, are one of the tools designers at DP3 Architects use to hone their visual ideas and convey the look and feel of a space to our clients.
By definition, a material board is an assemblage of colors, textures, prints, materials, or other design elements that evoke the style of a project. These elements may contain samples of; furniture and upholstery fabrics, woods, tiles, metals, stones, and wall coverings that are gathered during the design process and conceptualization stage and serve as inspiration for what the project will look like. Material boards can not only speak to the visual elements of a project, but also the ambiance the designer wants to create. Selecting finishes for a project is more than just finding a color scheme – it’s about selecting materials that will improve the quality of the space and enhance the user’s experience.

DP3 Architects Hosts Clemson University Grad Students
DP3 Architects was pleased to welcome graduate students from the Clemson University School of Architecture during their annual Greenville Firm Crawl. This program is sponsored by Graduate Architecture Professional Partnership (GAPP), a student-led organization which seeks to bridge the gap between education and practice in the field of architecture.
Firm crawls like this one can help students visualize what a day in the life might be like for a working architect and find their best fit for an internship or job post-graduation. Principals Brian Thomas and Ben Urueta talked about the firm’s philosophy towards design, collaboration, and office culture. Students also had the chance to tour the office and see some of the architects in action. DP3 Architects was inspired by their enthusiasm and look forward to seeing how they grow within the field.
DP3 Architects Holiday Food Drive
One in six of our South Carolina neighbors, including over 100,000 children, face hunger daily. Food banks like Harvest Hope help to chip away at that statistic by collecting and distributing nutritious food to food pantries, churches, shelters, and soup kitchens across the state. DP3 Architects hosted a holiday food drive to help the cause and provide meals to struggling families in our community.
Harvest Hope is on a mission to eliminate hunger and food insecurity in South Carolina. They are South Carolina’s largest food bank, providing food for organizations across the state who serve families in need, with special allocations for our most vulnerable residents, including children, seniors, and people in rural areas without access to grocery stores.
If you or your organization would like to donate to Harvest Hope or host your own food drive, information about how to get started can be found, HERE.
Consumer Picks Report 2022: Bahama Breeze
Nation’s Restaurant News released their 2022 Consumer Picks report on the 11 restaurants with the best ambiance. Ambiance ties the cuisine, service, and space together to shape the overall dining experience and perception of a restaurant.
DP3 Architects client, Bahama Breeze, made this list, with 73% of consumers rating the brand “above average” or “best in class” in the ambiance category.

The design captures the essence of the brand, incorporating vibrant materials, finishes, and unique character that create a tropical island atmosphere. As soon as you walk through the doors, you feel a million miles away from home. DP3 Architects Wins AIA South Carolina Award
DP3 Architects won a Design Award at the American Institute of Architects South Carolina (AIA SC)’s annual awards presented on December 02, 2022. DP3 Architects received a Merit Award in Interior Architecture for the design of the iStore located in Greenville, SC.
AIA SC’s Design Awards recognizes individuals, organizations, and projects exemplifying the very best in architecture. Winning projects are selected by a jury of architects and designers from outside the state in categories including: New Construction, Residential, Adaptive Reuse/Preservation, Interior Architecture, and Unbuilt Projects.
Completed in 2022, iStore’s 4,800 square foot space was designed to bring a renewed sense of brand prominence and to capture new foot traffic with its upgraded downtown presence. The interior design draws on a Scandinavian aesthetic with a minimalistic style that blends textures and contrasting tones. Products are displayed with sophisticated attention to detail and intentional thought to lighting and presentation.
The custom cash wrap is a focal point of the space. The asymmetric window pattern and dark wood of the “house” provide stark contrast to the order of the showroom. This unique element separates the store from the back-of-house operations and makes a bold statement.
The iStore storefront features clean lines, natural materials, and large windows allowing for an abundance of natural light. Overall, the new store provides a modern and welcoming shopping experience that is designed with both product and customer in mind.
“It’s an honor to have received this recognition,” said Brian Thomas, President of DP3 Architects. “We are proud of this project and the collaboration between our team, client, and construction partners.”

The Club at Keowee Key Ranks 1st Place in The Carolinas

Club + Resort Business posted its list of “Top Ranked Clubhouses” and the Club at Keowee Key was awarded 1st place in North and South Carolina and 38th nationally.
We are proud to have played a role in this Clubhouse Renovation project that delivered a modern-day resort featuring sophisticated venues and diverse indoor/outdoor experiences, while capitalizing on the site views.
“The clubhouse floor plan promotes what we are…. which is the central hub of the community,” says Mary Davis, Club Director. “It satisfies every need with quality spaces for each. You can have an intimate dining in the Cascades or Overlook, a casual meal at The Bistro, large banquets, events or parties in the Vista, and a social dynamic in the Bar, Bar Terrace or on one of the patios simultaneously.”
Combining the bold makeover of the outdated Clubhouse with updating the adjacent golf course was the cornerstone for an ambitious community revitalization. This signaled the client’s intent to substantially elevate the lifestyle experience for current members while creating a major attraction for potential future owners. The objective was a completely reimagined facility infused with contemporary lifestyle and design trends that would speak to the community’s brand.
Modern design and pragmatic function were paramount elements in achieving the project goals. The cohesive design includes a peaked, wood-clad ceiling and expansive rock building façade with angular windows providing a dramatic, yet welcoming portico entrance. The disjointed layout and roofline, a residual of prior renovations, were reconfigured using a hip-roof truss system that not only provided an interconnected blueprint, but also created the opportunity to add the foyer’s towering ceiling and rock wall. These, and the stone-hued quartz reception counter, reflect the surrounding Blue Ridge mountains.
Dramatic rooflines; raised ceilings; open sightlines; and panoramic, indoor/outdoor components in every venue were all on the member must-have list. Expanding bar, dining, and kitchen capacity was vital, and included a desire for a newly conceived neighborhood café, a satellite ballroom bar, and reconfigured casual dining and bar areas. There was also a need for additional conference rooms, offices, and arts and crafts studio. The incorporation of practical, yet tasteful lighting, effective sound attenuation, protected access, and up-to-date audio-visual capability rounded out the owner’s list of needs.
The new facility vastly improves flow, functionality, operating efficiency, revenue generation, and member satisfaction. All of this was accomplished within the budget and, according to member surveys, has more than met members’ expectations.
Special thanks to Club + Resort Business for the recognition! See more of this renovation project HERE.
