Winthrop University Studios for Making Research + Technology (SMaR+T)

Winthrop University
Rock Hill, SC

DP3 Architects is developing a program of space and building concepts for the Studios for Making Research + Technology (SMaR+T) facility at Winthrop University. Approximately 22,000 square feet over three levels, the building will house a band and orchestra rehearsal hall, piano lab, instrument storage and music library, classrooms, recording studios, and audio/video production studios. The entry and lobby are designed to integrate a main pedestrian pathway allowing students to enter and pass through the building on their way to other campus destinations. Further campus integration will occur from the rehearsal hall which will open to an outdoor stage for music under the trees. The second floor will house a screening/mixing studio. The third floor “maker studio” will feature spaces to accommodate such learning activities as virtual and augmented reality, robotics, 3D printing, laser cutting, lighting design, and large format printing.
